Assistant message
A turn in the conversation spoken by the model itself.
Think of it like
The reply bubbles on one side of a text thread — the half of the chat that’s the model talking.
Example
In a chat transcript, each thing the AI said is tagged as an assistant message.
How it actually works
Chat models see conversations as tagged turns: system, user, and assistant. Assistant messages are the model’s own past replies, fed back in so it stays consistent across a multi-turn chat. You can also seed one to steer or continue a response.
For product teams
Past assistant turns are part of the input — they shape and constrain what comes next.
For engineers
A conversation turn with the assistant role; prior ones are re-fed to maintain multi-turn coherence.
