Artificial intelligence
The broad goal of getting machines to do things that used to need a human mind.
Think of it like
“Vehicle” to “car” — AI is the whole category; today’s chatbots are one make and model inside it.
Example
A chess engine, a spam filter, and a chatbot are all “AI,” which is why the word explains almost nothing on its own.
How it actually works
AI is the umbrella term for machines performing cognitive-seeming tasks. It stretches from hand-coded rule systems to modern learned models. Most of what people mean by “AI” today is a narrow slice: large models trained on data, not anything with general understanding.
For product teams
Useful as a banner, useless as a spec — always ask which technique someone actually means.
For engineers
The field encompassing symbolic systems, classical ML, and deep learning aimed at intelligent behavior.
