An online platform where users chat with two anonymous models and vote which is better—crowdsourced pairwise comparison.

Like a public voting arena where you watch two gladiators and pick the winner.
Example
You submit a prompt. Arena shows you responses from Model A and Model B (you don't know which is which). You vote for the one you prefer.
How it actually works
Arena (LMSys is the most famous) is valuable because it measures real-world preference on diverse prompts. It produces Elo ratings. Downside: it's subject to prompt selection bias, user fatigue, and model-specific optimization (models can cheat by being verbose or confident). Results are biased toward models that win on easy chatting rather than on hard reasoning.
For product teams
Arena is good for understanding user preferences on released models. Don't over-index on Arena scores for planning.
For engineers
Validate arena results with domain-specific evals and human raters.
