The defined character and expertise you give an agent to shape how it behaves.
Think of it like
Casting an actor for a part — “you’re a meticulous accountant” gets a different performance than “you’re a brainstorming buddy.”
Example
One agent is set up as a skeptical code reviewer and another as an eager junior dev, so together they catch more than either would alone.
How it actually works
A persona is usually just a system prompt that fixes the agent’s role, tone, and priorities. It genuinely changes behavior — a “careful reviewer” persona flags issues a neutral one skips — which is powerful and a little unsettling, since it’s all steered by a paragraph of text. The risk is over-believing the costume: a persona shapes style and emphasis, not actual competence.
